Low Cost Christmas Decorations

Planning on doing your own home decorations for Christmas 2007? Money can get really tight in December and one way of stretching your budget is by sourcing low-cost Christmas decorations.

What is low-cost to one person can be quite expensive to someone else. A candy stick that costs 50 cents in Wal-Mart might be three times that price in Bloomingdales. Just bear in mind what your budget is and how many decorations you need so you can work out an average cost for each item.

Probably the best way to save money on Christmas decorations is to reuse last year's. Hopefully you packed them away carefully and they still look as good as new. If you are like our family, one or two of the baubles probably got a bit crushed but you have probably got enough survivors to decorate the tree! If some decorations are looking a little battle-weary you can always spruce them up a bit with a ribbon or some glitter.

Apart from your own used Christmas decorations, you can try finding second hand ones at fall yard sales. There's many a bargain to be had there. If you can't find any good yard sales you could always try eBay and other online auction sites. You can both used and discounted new decorations for sale.

If you really don't want to buy used Christmas decorations, then the best place to find low-cost ones is at your local dollar stores or discount stores. If you are prepared to hold off buying until a few days before Chistmas you more find quite a few discounted bargains at some of the more expensive department stores. Storage space costs retailers money and they would rather get rid of Christmas products at cost price rather than risk having to keep them for another year.

Of course, if you have an artistic streak, you can make your own own Christmas decorations. In fact, you can make this into a fun family occasion and get everybody involved. All you need is some scissors, colored paper and glue and you are all set to go. Save money and have fun at the same time!

Finally, if you are the kind of person who likes to plan ahead, you can take a leaf out of my Aunt Susie's book. She buys all her decorations for next year in the post Christmas sales. Sometimes she can get things for as little as 10 cents on the dollar.
